Year of the Rat 2008 - Postcards The sending of New Year cards in Japan is as popular, if not more so, as the sending of Christmas cards in other cultures. My wife's Pa is long retired but still received a good show of cards from ex-colleagues, business associates, friends, and family. Here are a collection of the cards that specifically display rats. Close ups of the rat images are displayed below.
On one side of the card below (left side) is typically the postal address and a lucky lottery number and on the other side (right side) is the New Year message. This is a very generic advertising card sent to everyone in the community. As such it doesn't display an address or any other contact details. It gives you a good idea of the postcard layout and format though.
